Cord-Cutting Setup

Step 1: Internet

You need 25+ Mbps for reliable 4K streaming. 50+ Mbps for multiple simultaneous streams. Check your speed at fast.com. Consider upgrading if under 50 Mbps. Wired ethernet to your streaming device is always better than WiFi.

Step 2: Antenna

A $30 antenna gets you NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC, PBS in full HD for free. Indoor flat antennas work for most urban/suburban homes. Check antennaweb.org for your local channels. DVR with an HDHomeRun ($150) or Tablo ($100).

Step 3: Streaming Services

Essential: Netflix ($7-23), Hulu ($8-18), Disney+ ($8-14). Add based on interests: Max ($10-16), Peacock ($8-14), Paramount+ ($6-12), Apple TV+ ($10). Sports: YouTube TV ($73), ESPN+ ($11). Free: Tubi, Pluto TV, Crackle, Kanopy (library card).

Step 4: Organize

Use your streaming device's universal search to find shows across all services. Create profiles for each family member. Download the JustWatch app to see which service has what. Cancel services you're not using each month. Rotate subscriptions.

Troubleshooting

Buffering

Check internet speed (fast.com). Restart your router. Use ethernet instead of WiFi. Move router closer or add a mesh WiFi node. Lower streaming quality in app settings. Close other apps/devices using bandwidth.

No Sound

Check TV is on correct input. Check HDMI cable is secure. In device settings: set audio output to PCM/Stereo (not Dolby) if your TV doesn't support surround. Restart device. Try a different HDMI port. Update firmware.

Can't Cast

Phone/tablet and Chromecast must be on same WiFi network. Restart both devices. Update the app. Check if casting icon appears in the app. Factory reset Chromecast as last resort. Guest mode may need to be enabled.

Picture Quality

Enable 4K/HDR in device settings AND in each app's settings (Netflix, Disney+, etc.). Use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable (HDMI 2.1). Check TV's HDMI port supports 4K (not all ports do). Ensure your streaming plan includes 4K.
